A big step forward for the High Seas Treaty

The National Assembly has approved France's ratification of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) treaty, or High Seas Treaty.

The Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) treaty represents real hope for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in the high seas, in addition to opening up new possibilities for scientific cooperation for the high seas.

In April, our partners at Fondation Tara Océan organised a 3-day workshop in Nice, France, to bring together state delegates, scientists and French and European institutions around the need for rapid ratification of the Treaty and the modalities of its implementation.

One month after the vote of the European Parliament in favor of the ratification of this Treaty by the European Union, France can become the first member country to ratify this decision, the 6th on a global scale.

This is a big step towards the ratification of this text, which must still pass the Senate, probably next July.

Find out more in the below film, from our partners at Fondation Tara Océan.
