BIOcean5D General Assembly 2025

The BIOcean5D team recently convened for our second General Assembly meeting at the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC) in Barcelona, from 11 to 13 February 2025.

BIOcean5D is a multidisciplinary project that brings together the expertise of 31 partners across 11 countries to explore marine life and how it changes across the 5 dimensions of 3D space, time and human impact. Our 2nd General Assembly meeting provided the perfect opportunity – just after passing the halfway point of BIOcean5D last December – to bring everyone together to look back on everything achieved so far and look forward to everything planned for the second half of our project.

BIOcean5D members immediately dived into the progress made by colleagues across the project thanks to the nearly 50 presentations held on the first day by early-career researchers. This series of presentations provided ECRs with the valuable opportunity to not only share their work with the consortium but also gain a comprehensive overview of everything happening across the entire project.

Next followed highlights, results and plans for the future, shared during the round table discussion with the leaders of BIOcean5D’s eight interconnected work packages. Ideas were also explored together about how to strengthen alignment and collaboration between work packages.

The informal conversations held between and after presentations allowed all members of the consortium to connect, exchange insights and build relationships, all of which are invaluable for the generation and exploration of new ideas and opportunities within and beyond BIOcean5D.

The second day of our General Assembly was dedicated to a series of workshops. With team members based in 11 different countries, these workshops provided the time and space for colleagues to work together on specific aspects of project tasks, or on global topics such as the generation and use of universal biodiversity metabarcoding data in BIOcean5D and Traversing European Coastlines (TREC).

The final day of our General Assembly was dedicated to strengthening collaboration and alignment with representatives from seven EU partner projects who share our ambitions to understand and protect marine life. Working together, we hope to generate the knowledge needed for the sustainable management and long-term preservation of our marine ecosystems.

Representatives from seven EU partner projects participated in BIOcean5D’s General Assembly.

Before leaving Barcelona, colleagues producing or working with data within BIOcean5D were invited to join a Hackathon. Practical hands-on guidance was provided during this side event to support the development of marine biodiversity datasets that meet the FAIR principles: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.

Grateful thanks to Ramiro Logares, Caterina Rodríguez, Colomban de Vargas and  Amandine Nunes-Jorge for organising our 2nd BIOcean5D General Assembly and to Claudia Delgado and Tony Burdett for organising the Hackathon.

Interweaving science and public engagement for a sustainable future

The TREC – Tara Europa expedition provided a unique opportunity to communicate and engage with a wide audience about the importance of our ocean. Public outreach activities carried out at key locations along the expedition route helped improve understanding, increase awareness and ignite interest across a number of topics, from marine plankton to plastic pollution.

Engagement through art

The BIOcean5D artists-in-residence program harnesses the power of art as a form of communication to develop citizen engagement with the widest possible public. The legacy of artwork created will ensure a lasting impact beyond the project duration.
